If your shortlist is already Aeron, Leap, and Fern, another explanation of “ergonomic features” will not help. The useful question is which chair’s geometry can fit you and your desk—and which differences still require a sit test.

The three chairs solve fit in different ways

OSHA’s workstation purchasing guide recommends adjustable seat depth because a pan that is too long can prevent a shorter user from reaching the backrest. That makes the Aeron’s sizing model the first real fork in this comparison: it does not use a sliding seat pan.

Aeron: choose a size, not merely a configuration

Herman Miller publishes separate dimensions for sizes A, B, and C. Their seat depths are 16, 17, and 18.5 inches respectively. The smaller A also starts lower, at a published 14.4-inch seat height; the C starts at 15.8 inches. If the front of the B seat reaches the back of your knees, ordering different arms or lumbar support cannot fix the frame geometry—you need to test size A instead.

The current Aeron product listing describes an 8Z Pellicle suspension seat and back and offers fully adjustable arms by height, depth, and angle. Keep Aeron on the shortlist if you specifically want a suspension surface and can verify the correct frame size. Eliminate it if you need to change seat depth for different users without changing chairs.

Leap: adjustable depth and a broad arm range

The Steelcase Leap product page lists standard 4D arms, height-adjustable lumbar support, a lower-back firmness control, and four recline stops plus upright lock. More important for fit, the manufacturer brochure gives the actual ranges: 15.75–18.75 inches of seat depth, 15.5–20.5 inches of seat height, and 12.75–20 inches between the fully adjustable arms.

That arm span is the practical reason to test Leap first when a narrow user and a broad user will share one chair, or when arm pads must move inward for typing and outward to clear the desk. Leap uses an upholstered seat and back rather than Aeron’s suspension frame, so dimensions cannot tell you which surface you will prefer.

Fern: adjustable depth, but a higher starting point

The Haworth Fern listing publishes a 15.5–18.5-inch seat-depth range, a 16.5–21.5-inch seat-height range, a 19.9-inch seat width, and 15.1–19.8 inches between the arms. Fern therefore overlaps much of Leap’s seat-depth range, but its published minimum seat height is one inch higher.

That inch is not automatically a problem. It becomes decisive when a low keyboard surface already forces the chair near its minimum or when your feet only just reach the floor in a 15.5-inch seat. Fern’s Wave Suspension back is a different structure from Leap’s upholstered LiveBack and Aeron’s Pellicle frame; no dimension predicts which back pressure you will prefer.

Eliminate by geometry; choose by sitting

  • Test Aeron first if a breathable suspension seat is the point of the purchase and one of its three frame sizes clearly matches. Confirm the exact A, B, or C in person.
  • Test Leap first if one chair must cover different leg lengths or its published 12.75–20-inch arm-spacing range fits the way you type and clear the desk.
  • Test Fern first if its adjustable seat range works for you and you want to compare its flexible back directly against Leap’s upholstered back—but check the 16.5-inch minimum height before arranging the test.

Do not use this table to award a universal winner. Cushion pressure, frame contact, recline feel, and lumbar pressure are person-specific and absent from the dimensional evidence. The productive showroom visit is short: set the seat to your measured range, move the arms under your actual desk height, and spend the remaining time comparing the three surfaces rather than recounting features.
